Most patients want the same four pieces of information before they go any further. Here they are, in plain terms.
The sections below explain how each pathway works in practice, what the procedure fee covers, and what sits outside it.
Whether you are funded through health insurance or paying for your care directly, the journey starts the same way: an outpatient consultation with Mr Hussain. He listens, examines you, reviews any imaging you bring, and gives you a clear plan that includes non-surgical options as well as surgical ones. Only once that plan is agreed does the question of fees become concrete, because the fee depends on what is actually right for your hip.
Both pathways are welcome at all three of Mr Hussain's practice locations: the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Woodlands Suite, Priory Hospital Edgbaston (Circle Health Group), and The Harborne Hospital (HCA Healthcare). The information below is split into the route most relevant to you.
Covered by your policy, subject to pre-authorisation. Our secretary handles the paperwork.
Read the insured routeA precise, itemised quotation is issued after your consultation, once the clinical plan is agreed.
Read the self-pay routeEvery patient starts here. The consultation lets Mr Hussain assess whether hip resurfacing is right for you, whether a total hip replacement would serve you better, or whether non-surgical management is appropriate at this stage. You leave with a written plan and, where surgery is recommended, an itemised quotation.
A GP referral letter is helpful because it carries useful medical history, but it is not required to book. You can self-refer directly. If you are using health insurance, your insurer may require a referral letter before they authorise treatment, so it is worth checking with them first.
Mr Hussain is recognised by Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, Cigna, The Exeter, Freedom Health, Healix, Legal & General and Police Mutual. If your insurer is not listed, please ask. Most major UK private medical insurers will cover hip resurfacing where it is clinically indicated and your policy permits.
Once Mr Hussain has examined you and recommended a treatment plan, his secretary, Wendy Richards, prepares the paperwork your insurer needs to authorise treatment. You do not need to manage this yourself. Your insurer will issue an authorisation code which is then attached to your hospital booking and your invoice.

Most comprehensive policies cover the consultation, the procedure fee (which includes the surgeon's fee and the anaesthetist's fee), the implant, the hospital stay, and routine post-operative follow-up. Coverage of pre-operative investigations and post-discharge physiotherapy varies by policy. The detail sits with your insurer rather than with us, which is why the questions below are worth asking them before treatment.
Self-pay patients pay directly for their care rather than through an insurance policy. A precise, all-inclusive quotation is provided after your consultation, once the clinical plan is agreed. The reasons fees are quoted after consultation rather than published as a fixed price are clinical and practical: the implant choice (Adept, ReCerf or H1) carries a different cost, the chosen hospital prices its theatre and ward facilities differently, and the expected length of stay depends on your fitness and recovery profile. A single published number would be misleading more often than helpful. Price is only one part of a self-pay decision — our guide to choosing a hip resurfacing surgeon covers what else to weigh up.
Book an initial consultation. After your examination, Mr Hussain will explain which implant suits your hip and which hospital is most appropriate for your case. Wendy Richards will then issue a written itemised quotation within a few working days. The quote is valid for a defined period and will not change unless your clinical picture changes between quote and surgery.
If you are weighing self-pay against staying on an NHS waiting list, our article on self-pay hip resurfacing and the waiting list sets out what waiting costs a resurfacing candidate and how the self-pay pathway runs from enquiry to surgery.
For both insured and self-pay patients, the surgical package is designed to be fully inclusive. There is one bundled fee for the operative episode, rather than a series of invoices arriving from different parties. Patients are not asked to sort out the anaesthetist's bill, the implant supplier's bill, or routine post-operative review invoices separately. It is all in one place.
If your specific case requires anything beyond the standard package, for example an extended hospital stay or treatment for a separate condition identified during work-up, that will be discussed and agreed with you in advance, never as a surprise at the invoice.
Routine post-operative reviews are part of the package for both insured and self-pay patients. Mr Hussain will see you at agreed intervals after surgery to check your progress, review your X-rays, and adjust your rehabilitation plan. If you need additional follow-up beyond the routine schedule, the £175 follow-up consultation fee applies for self-pay patients, and the same arrangement is made with your insurer for insured patients.
